IGCSE Course

Overview

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education(IGCSE) is an international qualification granted to students taken by students at a class 10 level, similar to boards like ICSE, CBSE or SSC. It is a two year program where students have the option of taking the exams in either May or November. The results are issued in August and January respectively. The IGCSE is one of the most internationally recognized boards and is a precursor to the A-Levels, which are the equivalent class 12 certification. It is a very flexible course and provides students with a unique skill set. The IGCSE provides a variety of subjects allowing students to choose what they like the most, unlike other boards.

Percentage

Entry into a school offering IGCSE is done after class 8. Currently there are 60-odd schools which offer this course. However that number is rising rapidly as many schools convert due to the strong curriculum offered. Thus good grades are essential to get into one of these schools as is a good personal interview.

Subjects

IGCSE offers a wide range of subjects for students to pick from. Students have to select at least 7 subjects out of the categories listed below.

  • Group 1: Language(First Language, Second Language, Foreign Language, etc)
  • Group 2: Humanities and Social Sciences(Geography, English Literature, History, etc)
  • Group 3: Sciences(Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc)
  • Group 4: Mathematics(Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, etc)
  • Group 5: Creative, Technical & Vocational (Accounting, Business Studies, Computer Studies, Music, etc)

Students must choose at least 2 subjects from Group 1, and 1 subject from each of the other four groups. In addition to this they must choose 1 more subjects from any of the groups. In addition many subjects offer a core or extended program. The extended curriculum is, sort of, a specialization in that subject. It is more challenging and designed for students who are expected to achieve grades A+ to C.

Career Options

Students completing the IGCSE attain a very high degree of academic excellence. Because of the grouping of subjects, students receive a well rounded education while at the same time allowing them to decide where their interest lies. Besides this extra-curricular activities form an integral part of the course which also add to the all round development. The IGCSE is one of the most sought-after boards today. It is present in over 140 countries and has worldwide credibility. Its international outlook yields an international perspective. Also it is recognized widely by universities around the world, more so in the UK.
